Outsmart Those Feathered Bandits: DIY Crow-Proof Bird Feeder!

Hey there, fellow bird enthusiasts! Tired of crows hogging all the goodies in your feeder? Don’t we all? Those clever birds are persistent, but fear not! Today, we’re taking back the birdseed with a fantastic DIY project: a crow-proof bird feeder!

This feeder is all about offering a feast for the little guys while creating an obstacle course for the larger birds. It’s a win-win! Plus, it’s a breeze to make, and you can customize it with recycled materials. Let’s get started!

What you’ll need:

  • A recycled container: This could be an old plastic bottle, a tin can, or even a suet feeder cage (minus the suet cake holder).
  • Hardware cloth: This is a sturdy wire mesh that comes in various sizes. Opt for a mesh with holes small enough for smaller birds like chickadees and finches to access the seeds, but large enough to deter crows.
  • Hanging mechanism: Depending on your container, you might need wire, zip ties, or a hook to hang your feeder.
  • Perches (optional): Wooden dowels or twigs make perfect perches for the little birds to enjoy their meal.
  • Seed: Now for the fun part – fill it up with your favorite birdseed blend!

Building your Crow-Proof Paradise:

  1. Prep your container: For a plastic bottle, cut feeding holes large enough for smaller birds but too small for crows. Tin cans might need similar adjustments. If you’re using a suet feeder cage, this step is done!
  2. Cut the hardware cloth: Measure the circumference of your container and cut a piece of hardware cloth to wrap around it with a little overlap. You can also cut a small roof piece for added protection from the elements.
  3. Assemble the Fortress: Secure the hardware cloth to your container using zip ties or wire. Make sure there are no gaps where a crafty crow could squeeze in. If using a suet feeder cage, you can simply attach the hardware cloth roof.
  4. Perch Party (optional): Add some perches by drilling small holes into the feeder and securing the dowels or twigs.
  5. Hang it High: Choose a sturdy location away from bird feeders frequented by crows. Hang your creation using your chosen method and admire your handiwork!

Time to Feast!

Fill your feeder with the chosen seed and watch the magic happen. Smaller birds will be able to access the food easily, while the crows will be left scratching their heads (or wings, I suppose).

Bonus Tip: For extra crow-proofing, paint your feeder in bright colors that crows dislike, like red or yellow.

Enjoy the Show!

Now sit back, relax, and enjoy watching your feathered friends enjoy their crow-free mealtime entertainment. You’ve created a bird feeder haven that caters to the little guys, and that’s something to celebrate!
